Virtual Inspections for Generator Contractors in Florida

Standby generators are one of the fastest-growing residential permit categories in Florida, and the inspection should not take longer than the install. Freedom Code Compliance (FCC) performs virtual inspections for standby and portable generator installations under Florida Statute 553.791, covering electrical interconnection, transfer switch, fuel line, and anchored pad finals under FBC-Mechanical, FBC-Electrical, and FBC-Fuel Gas. Engineered concrete pad or anchor details may require plan review.

We solve your biggest challenges

  • Generator finals blocked by separate electrical, mechanical, and gas inspections each with their own building-department queue
  • Post-hurricane surges where jurisdictions are booked out for weeks on generator-install inspections
  • Transfer-switch interconnection details getting flagged at final instead of during plan review
  • Anchored-pad compliance in Florida wind zones creating engineering questions mid-install

Workable time is the time our team can act on your plans during business hours (weekdays 9–5, Fridays 9–4 ET). It’s how long a compliant submission with no blockers takes us to review and approve within business hours. Time waiting on you, like corrections or a quote out for approval, isn’t counted.

No scheduling required. You simply request the inspection when the work is ready. Live inspection requests are taken Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm ET; offline inspections can be submitted any time.

FAQ

Generator Contractors FAQs

Do generator permits need plan review with FCC, or only inspection?

Most Florida residential standby generator installs are inspection-only — Freedom Code Compliance performs the virtual final covering electrical interconnection, transfer switch, fuel gas connection, and anchored pad. Plan review is typically only needed when the project includes an engineered concrete pad, non-standard anchoring in a high-wind zone, a main panel upgrade, or a commercial-scale generator. FCC handles the plan review when it is required, and the inspection either way. FCC does not pull the permit or file the NTBO.

What Florida Building Code sections apply to a generator install?

Standby generator installs in Florida typically hit three FBC chapters at once. The electrical interconnection and transfer switch fall under FBC-Electrical (referencing the current NEC edition adopted by the state). The unit itself and its combustion-air and exhaust provisions fall under FBC-Mechanical. The LP or natural gas line falls under FBC-Fuel Gas. Freedom Code Compliance verifies all three on the final. Wind-zone anchoring of the concrete pad is checked against the local wind speed map and any engineered anchor detail.

How fast are generator inspection results?

Live video inspections through myFCC Mobile match contractors with a licensed inspector in minutes and return results before the call ends — which can help the crew close out the install before leaving the site. Offline inspections, with GPS-tagged and timestamped photos of the transfer switch, fuel line, and anchored pad, are typically reviewed and returned within minutes during normal business hours. When plan review is required for an engineered pad or anchor detail, that is a separate single-trade review that typically comes back in minutes.
